Tell them to restore fairness and due process to the immigration system

In the aftermath of 9-11, our country has seen a steady erosion of basic human rights. Some of our laws have been denying basic due process to thousands of people in the United States, and many policies discriminate against people on the basis of national origin, race, religion, citizenship or immigration status.

We shouldn’t let the government treat anyone like this, because denying human rights and due process to some puts all of our freedoms at risk.

Email the Department of Homeland Security now and urge them to terminate the 287(g) program and restore fairness so that we can uphold our American ideals.

Dear Secretary Napolitano and Assistant Secretary Morton,

We ask that you terminate the 287(g) program immediately. Your own office has issued a report by the Department of Homeland Security's Office of the Inspector General faulting the failed program, stating "in the absence of consistent supervision over immigration enforcement activities, there is no assurance that the program is achieving its goals.”

Instead, since it's inception, the 287(g) program has raised serious concerns among federal officials, law enforcement officials and local community groups. This latest report paints a portrait of ill trained and poorly supervised 287(g) agencies that are NOT concentrating on targeting people who pose the greatest risk to public safety and the community.

The misuse of the 287(g) program by its current participants has rendered it ineffective and dangerous to community safety. The program increases problems of racial profiling and civil rights abuses and its unchecked powers are indiscriminately targeting immigrants and persons of color.

No amount of reforms will change this disturbing reality. We ask that you recognize that it is time to end 287(g), not mend it.
